Question 8.8 differential compatibility

My understanding is that later model (1987 and newer) F-150 8.8" differentials use a 7/8" cross pin rather than the 3/4" used in earlier versions. Are there any problems putting a later model differential in a 1983 F-150? Presumably the axles will stick out an additional 1/16" on each side, but the axle bearing races should accomodate that, I believe. Any comments? Thanks in advance.

For the record, I went ahead with this and it worked fine.

I never saw this previously - 'bout a month ago I popped a 89 8.8 (which is a later version) in my 81 F100 (which has the same frame and spacing as yours) and it runs great and much quieter.
