camshaft, lobe, compression

I've read that you don't really want less than 114* lobe sep in a SD EFI 302, and this is partly because the about 8:1 stock compression isn't enough.

The stock E7TE heads have about a 64 or 65cc combustion chamber right?? If i put some 58cc combust cham heads that would but me up to least 8.5:1 or 9:1 right. So with that and a MAF conversion would it be feasible to run a 112 or even 110 lobe separation.

I just see so much more variety in that range of lobe sep. In fact the only 114* cam on summit i can find with the right specs is the famous 35-255-5.

Static CR on the 302 motor is actually close to 9:1 with the E7 heads. CR is not what makes SD cam selection difficult though, it's the vacuum signal. 114 LSA will provide a smoother vacuum so the computer can maintain control, this does hurt power output some though.

If you go to mass air then you can run any cam you want, the really short LSA cams will produce noticably rougher idle and poorer emissions, but the computer will be able to work with it. 110-112LSA is the sweet spot for broadest powerband and there are loads of cams available for the Windsor family in this range.

remember also the lower the LSA the higher the cranking compression of the engine...this may effect your timing too depending on what route you go with heads and so on. if you go from a 114 to a 110 you'd see 5 PSI +/- higher on your compression guage. thats where the you see the higher torque numbers, rougher idle. but a 110 should still be very streetable. It also depends a lot on your heads. the better they flow or if you are buzzing it at higher rpm then the wider LSA seems to work better. when you select your cam you'll see most of them are geared towards 110-112 LSA off the shelf like conanski said
