Paul- Quick question instead of starting a new thread,- at what point do you think the stock pushrods have to be upgraded? I'm considering an upgrade to a 120# @ 1.800, 300# @ 1.120, 325# rate spring. I'm having trouble finding hardend pushrods to fit my motor that don't cost a fortune.
you got to pay to play, So what im getting from this is if you get a .500+ lift cam you wouldnt need upgraded rockers and that money is better put to use else where
An earlier question that was never answered: stock ratio is 1.6:1, so basically stock rockers are 1.6:1 pedestal mount rockers. I doubt you would ever get to the point where you needed 1.7:1 rockers after upgrading the cam, and doubt you would care for the results with just a rocker swap. Some people claim the stock springs are good up to @ .500 lift, but I would highly reccommend using springs spec'd by the cam manufacturer, if not by brand, at least by spring spec's. And yes- upgrading rockers if far,far down the list of where to put a limited amount of money to make HP.
I have a bucket full of pretzles here that used to be pushrods from a stock 5.0 roller motor. I watched them bend as I cranked the motor over by hand!! ...this on a motor with the comp 35-349-8 cam and matching dual springs. I now have the recommended Comp pushrods ordered and have to wait even longer to hear this motor run.
Thanks Paul- Not what I really wanted to hear, but what I suspected and just didn't want to think about. I guess I'll just put some cash away for some unless I find some for cheap. I'd hate to buy a high dollar set without checking pushrod length first and find out they are the wrong length. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll accidentally need the hardened 8.152" length pushrods I already own.
Well BVA- The stock length pushrods for my engine are 8.182" length. I haven't had my heads in the machine shop yet, or block, or anything for that matter yet. So between former and future machine work and a swap from the stock steel rockers to SVO 1.6 :1 roller rockers, with a new set of stainless steel valves and possibly/probably new exhaust seats, who knows what length they will need to be. I already have the 8.152's and a set of brand new 8.182" (manufacturer unknown ). The 8.182's are stock replacements. I need to see exactly what I need before I buy anymore, or I'll have a set of 8.150's to add to my collection of pushrods that I'll probably never use.
I'm going to be needing a set of hardened pushrods for my 5.8 build so I may be able to take one of those sets off your hands if you don't require them. I'm putting brand new Dart heads on this block, but with stud mounts and roller rockers I too won't know what length I need until I measure.
That might work, Paul, but only the 8.152" ones are hardened. I think I found some 8.182" hardened Mellings for a reasonable price. Like I said, though, I won't be buying them untill I get to the assembly stage, and it will be a while. Drop me a PM when you get to that point, if I don't have a set on hand ,I may be able to point you to a set. Oh-yeah, I checked on the spec's for the springs you used to make pretzels and they are real close to what I'll be running.
