2003 7.3

I see that 2003 is the crossover year. I see some 2003 with the 7.3 and some with the 6.0. What is up with that and how can you tell the difference? I would really like a 7.3 crew cab F250 or F350 but I am having a hard time finding any. Is the 7.3 really that much better than the 6.0? THANKS!

EARL!

From what i hear it depends on how much time you want to spend in the shop. The 7.3 is one of the most reliable engines there are. I am not sure of the easiest way to tell them apart without opening the hood but im sure someone on here will be more help

I have an 03 with a 7.3...and have no idea how to tell the difference. I was told that the early 03's had 7.3's and late 03's had 6.0's. I've talked to several people that have 6.0's that wish they were 7.3's.

Look at the badge on the front doors. The 7.3's are dark colored with a matte finish. The 6.0s are shiny chrome. Otherwise start it or open the hood.

The passenger side valve cover tells the engine displacement.

6.0 is a great motor... dont let the naysayers bag it. 400hp 7.3, about $4,000...

400hp 6.0... about $1,000...

I can tell by sound, but if it is stock, the 7.3 has a slant cut exhaust tip, the 6.0 has a straight cut... If you look on the drivers frame rail, the 7.3 has just a pump at the front, the 6.0 has a hfcm... or horizontal fuel conditioning module...

Another way to tell the difference is the 8th character in the VIN on a 7.3 is F, on a 6.0 I think its a P. My '03 is awesome, third one I've owned.

One thing I noticed too is the 6.0's with the tow mirrors have the signal in them from the factory. Only a few of the 7.3's have them and they were swapped out by their owners. Door badges as well.

If its a 6.0 it will be sitting in the service bay, and the OASIS report will be as long as War and Peace (especially the 03 and 04s)
