Im just going to pickup a 67-72 F250 4x4(im not sure what years, its parts have come from) and its power steering is not getting assist in one direction,it steers easily one way but not the other! its prev owner replaced the pump and several lines, and tryed bleeding it. its obviously been pieced together since its my understanding these trucks never came with power steering, its the ram style system, not the late 70's integral power steering. anybody here have an experience like this, and better still a solution. at least this one has the proper bed/cab gap,so im assuming it actually has a 67-72 131" wheelbase frame, rather than a 73 or newer frame like my other one has.
Could be a clog in the cylinder.....but more likely is is a bad valve assembly... The valve is part of the linkage and will have 4 hoses bolted to it....if your steering is not working in one direction, likely the valve is binding or not actuating for some other reason when you turn that direction....they can apparently be easily damaged if removed using a "pickle fork" and, well, they go bad on their own every 4 or 5 years....lol
thanks,i will try and play with it a little tomorrow.its registration paperwork VIN lists it as an F100,its VIN plate decodes to its having a T18 4 spd(of course that VIN plate is on one of the 2 extra doors sitting in the bed)its currently installed drivers side door VIN plate has a trans code for a 3 spd. manual(at least it's from an F250) but it actually has an NP435 and a Dana 24....im now the proud owner of both Frankenstein, and Frankie's bride. its got an FE,2bbl carb, engine LOOKS new(that could be a good paint job),and it came with an extra front fender, 2 extra doors, exh.manifolds, other stuff.
another consideration ive thought about, and could use some input from someone more experienced(or smarter)than I. since it seems as if these early power steering systems have there fair share of glitches,im considering pulling ALL the p/s stuff off this newest truck, and saving it for spares for my other 250. If i choose this route,is the steering going to work properly as a manual steering setup? the P/s pump is new,a couple hoses have been replaced. can i remove the 4 hoses going to the valve, the ram assy. on the tie rod,and safely drive w/Armstrong steering?
interestingly enough, after sitting a while, the steering feels better! im wondering if air was trapped in a line,or the valve for that matter, and it bubbled up and out into the pump reservoir. of course now i noticed that the carb is leaking right below the fuel inlet fitting, the fitting is tight,so i better see whats causing that! If the steering decides it wants to work properly, maybe i will start going through stuff on this truck, rather than parking it in the back. I may have someone local who wants to trade me a set of 16" skinny tires on rims for the 33x12.5x16.5's that it came with, and that would also make steering easier....
Be glad! I'm trying to track down a replacement valve for a defective one NPD shipped me....no one plans to have any stock for another 4 to 6 weeks....!
