I'm at 3600ft. haven't noticed a difference, But at times I smell fuel...and burn rich...would my fuel pump be pumping to much? I really sould get a regulator in-line to monitor that...
If it is stock I would think not but if possible test the pump, should be no more than a couple of pounds.
My thought if the pump is OK the needle and seat in carb could be worn enough to allow poor fuel control in the carb bowl, float damaged either in allowing fuel to enter it or where it contacts the needle.
At 3600 feet Iam not sure, I have dealt with sea level where it is set as called for but here even though it doesnt set the world on fire you can tell the difference 2 degrees BTC can make.
[quote=ALBUQ F-1;6428830]With the original 6v system, plug gap is only .025". Champion plug (H-10) are notoriously lousy, Autolite #216's are much better. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with a 6v system, but there is less margin for bad connections or frayed wires.
Yes, very true, I have never able to find anything but a lawnmower or a Dodge that can run on Champions.
k..car is on hold for the weekend....I got busy Fri and didn't get the radiator picked up. I have always loved those 50's F..ees and this car is making me want one more and more. A sled cruiser type 50 tudor on a matching trailer behind a effie headed to the dragstrip would be a pretty cool pic wouldn't it? Hmmm...more food for thought...k...way way back to first things first
Update...made some real progress! First..carb was re-rebuilt after discovering that it was full of crud (like the liner/sealer in the tank was letting loose). Pump was gone through again too...and an inline fuel filter added. Had radiator redone and new hoses, t-stats,cap,etc added on reinstall. Reset points and set timing with a timing light. Also had a vacuum gauge hooked up to the vac lead into the car for the wipers. Timing was WAY retarded! Timed by light to mark on crank pulley and vac gauge read 18 inches merc? That seems high to me vs what I have seen but marks were spot on and car doesn't ping so? (and yes, had vac advance disconnected during it). Car picked up a ton of seat of the pants and temp now runs dead solid in the middle of the gauge. Feels closer, much closer to how it should. My brother had a uh, stuff eating grin on his face driving after....that is good! Still a touch rough on accel...thinking maybe richen er up a bit (has a kinda lean pop between shifts) but it is closer to right...much closer! Now he is thinking flatheads are cool and looking for headers and different duals and, and, and! Mission not accomplished, but making headway!
Any ideas on where I go from here..timing, carb, etc to 'fine' tune it? He is tickled, I am not...I am kinda a picky SOB but even I have to grin some watching him grin. Oh, BTW...both his and my grin are the result of YOUR input...so I thank you sincerely for all your input!
Glad you got it fixed! I'd be surprised if it's jetted lean unless someone changed the jets. They ran 'em rich back in the day. Could some passages still be plugged? Also, on Holley 94's the accelerator pump is adjustable (choice of 3 holes), try one step richer on that.
Car still has an issue with fuel draining back out of the filter and needing a shot in the carb to start it after it has sat for a few hours. The check valves seemed fine when recently checked but? What else could cause this other than crud maybe being drawn into them intermittently (still think the tank sealer done long ago is breaking up and causing the issue)? Anyone know the best stuff to flush the tank out with to get rid of whatever was used and to prep for a good sealer? Thanks all
If it is tank sealer that's decomposing, you really need to take it to a radiator shop and have it tanked, flushed, and either re-coated with good stuff or at least phosphated to slow corrosion. Then flush all lines and the pump real thoroughly.
Is the gas cap vented correctly? Almost sounds like a little vacuum in the tank might pull the fuel back through. After you drive it a while take the cap off and listen for a whoosh or hiss of the tank sucking air back in. Couldn't be that simple but who knows.
I agree about taking the gas tank to a radiator shop. If it is the lining coming off, it is going to constantly be stopping up the line or filters for a long long time, and most likely will hit when you are nowhere near home.
