Today I had both neg batt. cables disconnected and was doing some wiring for some lights I put on my truck. I tapped into a harness for the keyless entry to trigger a relay to light up my lights whenever I unlock the doors or open the door. Everything went smoothly and it works great. When I went to button everything up I decided to check for any drain on my batt.(never done this on my truck before). I connected my test light between the neg batt cable and neg bat post and the test light flashes and a relay or something in the keyless entry module under the dash is clickng away(gets faster when i open the door). Thinking I messed something up by tapping into that circuit I disconnected everything that I had done. did the same test again and same thing happens. Im hoping this is normal and not something I caused.
Has anyone experienced this before?
By the way it only happens when both neg batt cables are disconected.
With everything hooked up (my wiring and batteries) everything works as it should, lights, door locks, my own lights and relay, all function as intended.
I just hope that this "problem" is normal and not something that I caused that will be slowly draining my batteries or something.
You should be OK. I only use a VOM and don't think a test light will work as you are attempting to use it. It probably is dropping the voltage (like a resistor) to what is powered up with key off. Like PCM, radio memory, keyless entry module and more than likely some other stuff I don't know about. Opening the door would cause overhead lights to come on creating more current draw thus faster relay clicking.
If you want to check current drain as you described with key off then use a VOM with AMP option or just a normal external amp gauge instead of a trouble light.
