Shades and names of paint

Just curious if Ford had names for their shades of paint back in the 60s ?
I would like to find out what the color is on my truck

I had a 1976 Trans Am that had a "Buccaneer Red" paint job.

Going by the first chart, I would say the color is "Rangoon Red", though the color of the truck seems much darker.

The second chart has a color called "Chestnut" which is much closer.

Is there any info or code on the truck itself that gives the color ?

Yes its in/on your warranty data plate for originial color. On the data plate next to wheel base (W.B) is (Color) and then (Model) type. You will have a single or two digit letter. Post that and someone will decipher it.

I went and looked at the plate .
Found WB-114 Model-100, but in between there is a spot marked color and
it has nothing at all stamped on it !

I have a picture of the warranty plate on my gallery, so maybe you can see something I cannot.

Now I am totally baffled.
This time I went to the drop down box tagged "Ford Trucks", not just Ford
and got some different colors.
There was still the Rangoon Red, but no Chestnut on this chart.
Considering this paint is over 46 years old, maybe it just got darker over time.

If anyone gets the chance, please look at my gallery and see what you think and also look at the warranty plate.

NOTE: There is no PAINT code on your trucks Warranty Plate, so the truck was painted special color(s)!

When customers requested special color(s), there is no PAINT code on the Warranty Plate.

It will not be Rangoon or just plain old Red, which is PAINT code: J.

It's not Wimbledon White, either.

Colonial White was used thru 1963. Wimbledon White (which is an off white) was used from 1964 thru the 1990's.

WOW, now that caught me off guard !
Don't know why Grandpa would have done that unless he got a good deal on it, because he would not have had it done special due to lack of $$$$$.

I guess if it had been "Chestnut" it would have been stamped V on the color code !!

Did your grandpa order the truck special...or buy it "off the lot?"

In order to get a special color...someone would have had to special order the truck...if not your grandpa, then there's this possibility:

Sometimes ppl ordered a vehicle with special features, then didn't buy it for whatever reason, so the truck was sold to whoever wanted it.

I've been checking with some of my aunts and uncles, but they don't have any specific information on the truck.
Will keep trying !

Was wondering if the 1962 split (red/white) paint job was considered special order.
I have seen many 62s and most are solid colors.

Tu-tone paint was a RPO = Regular Production Order.

There's no PAINT code on your trucks Warranty Plate...when this occurs, one or both of the colors are a special order. A special order is not an RPO.

Well I drew a big zero on the paint color.
None of my relatives who were around in 1962 remember the details of
my grandpa buying the truck except he was proud as a peacock of it.

Most likely he bought it straight off the lot and it was special ordered
by someone else who did not get it.
