Hey Rebo - I can see your point about the pepper spray. A 9mm would do nothing to most adult bears though, except make it even more angry.
I definitely agree that being very wary of your surroundings is paramount. I'm personally more concerned with 2-legged predators when I'm out and about!
BTW, shooting a flare gun in the forest could easily start a fire which the CDF and the State would hold you liable for starting. I don't think that's a good idea, IMHO.
