header/y pipe issues
hey yall. been a while since ive even been near this forum. combo of having internet /comp troubles and losing my 89 f250 to frrame cancer. well anyway i just picked up an 88 f150 for 800 bucks with 82k. trouble is the guy i bought it from put shorty headers on it and let it sit. the original y pipe was under the truck and he moved it and ran it over. so now i yanked the one of my 250 which should fit both being 5.0 engines. but it doesnt. every set of shortys i have looked up fit the stock y so if anyone has any tips on installation it would be greatly appreciated. the y just doesnt seem to line up at all on the drivers side. thank you

If he had the y pipe under it, it prob didnt fit when he put the headers on. Are they mustang style shorties? If so you will have to mod the y pipe to fit, if there truck style it should just bolt up. The way to tell is if the collectors are really close to the firewall. The truck shorties point down. Let me try to find some pics.

that was honestly my first two thoughts that you guys mentioned. one being the fact that my 250 had the manual and this ones got the aod. but we did a sise by side comparison between the wrecked y and the good one and they look identical right downt to seconed cat cut off in the same spot. but my big thought was they were mustang style headers cause they do point at more of an angle to the firewall. which with what youve said they probably are. i was hoping to drive this truck out of is yard. but i dont think it will happen. i am gonna have it towed here, and then yank the the headers and confirm they are wrong and then either use my iold manifolds or buy a complete header to tip exhaust for it so its done right, thank very much for the info. this is only my seconed ford truck and first with mods like headers. im used to long long tube headers on gm g body cars so y pipes and and shorties are all mind boggling to me right now.

i would love to go with long tubes believe me. im looking at ease of install on this one for the vehicle i will be driving everyday and wheeling with ocassionally. summit shortys are 160 bucks, and i can get some money for those unused brand new stang headers im sure. cobime those with the summit dual outlet cat back and ill be happy for now as far as exhaust goes. maybe when my 84 cutlass and my fiances 84 grand prix are done ill really get into this truck. well not maybe thats my full intent.

The 2nd set is supposed to be the 5.0L truck headers, at least that was the pic that I got, the 3rd set is a pic of the 5.8L ones. So who knows.
I have long tubes on my truck and it took me about an hr or so to make the y/h pipe to meet up with my already made non-cat back lol. Here are some pics.
Here is how I did it. Here is the Dual Y section off the long tube collectors. I used 2 90* to bring it over to the passenger side. I used some flex exhaust pipe for the passenger side to make the bend over the trans cross member.
Here is the other 1/2 after the crossmember. The flange is where I bolt the stock cat back on for inspection time. traced the cat flange onto some carboard and then cut it out. Then I traced 2 2 1/2 holes onto the flange, so it can be true dual back. Muffler is DIDO Flowmaster 40's
Then I have 2 90*'s out of the back of the muffler and then 2 3" SS Slash cut tips at a angle infront of the rear tire.
Hope it gives some people ideas when your doing your long tubes.
Oh here is the converter exhaust.
Getto lookin but passes inspection.

heartthrob and hooker both make a manifold back kit the heartthrob kit comes with glass packs for $200 shipped i cut the o2 sensor section out of my factory y-pipe and cut holes in the 2 down tubes where they came close by the trans and welded the o2 sensor mount in and cut and welded the air pump line. sounds great and no check engine light.

once work week hits i get swamped and dont get time to get on here somtimes. but as far as that long tube set up goes i like it. and after doing some lookin i found long tubes to fit and a header back 2 1/4 header back system without mufflers that would be perfect really. i say that because in my state my truck is considered a classic do to being 20 years old and with classic tag, i dont need to run emissions. so im thinking bout this also. now i just gotta get this thing towed home cause all of a sudden the tool box isnt included, and i get the title, which is from mass, that has all the private seller areas filled. ontop of it cause the guy got it from bought it from somone else who didnt register it, and then he himself didnt register it, niether of our names are on the title. i know this strays from my original topic but if anyones got ideas let me know please, cause i am nervous now.thanks a bunch
