I haven't the slightest clue what type of PCM to look for. What all do I need to know

 

I agree how do you tell what is on your truck? My truck was built in 4 of 99 and is hard to start and is not very smooth and shifts strang somtimes.

 

you should have the right PCM..your truck is a 99.5 truck,, the end of the early bird was 12/7/98 but here is how you check for your PCM code

you will want one of these PCM's..if you have a auto trans..you need a PCM for auto trans,,

your early bird PCM can not be re flashed with what you are looking for...
All of these can be used however it may need to be reflashed depending on the PCM code you want.

I've just bought an early '99 F350 and am currently in the process of cleaning it up and doing moderate upgrading.
So far I've swapped the original air filter out for a 6.0 style using the Ford conversion kit. I've also got (2) CPS units on order (1-swap, 1-spare).
What other upgrades make sense?

Has anyone tried the fuel rail crossover hoses?

i think your talking about the HPX...its a high pressure cross over for the oil rails...worth doing for sure..the in tank kit called the hutch and harpoon mods are also worth doing... what are you looking for in your truck?? little better then stock?? high HP ? or some place in between?? now that you have air getting in....put a 4" exhaust on to help get the air back out...put in a set of gauges then add the DP tuner...

 

Thanks- I was thinking oil and typed fuel. I'm looking for fuel economy and overall ruggedness and reliability. I've added an oil pan heater as well as two battery plates to the existing block heater for quick winter warm-ups, (I live in Alaska). I drove it from Glennallen to Anchorage, (200 miles) w/cruise control set at 50 mph, with the old stock air filter still installed and got 21.1 mpg.

 

If you get a DP does it take care of this or should anyone with an early 99 always change the PCM?

 

Clay, Jody is now able to tweak your early bird PCM just as good as he can the later ones, so no need to swap anymore (unless yours is a Cali, then swap because the programming on the Cali's is crap). If you decide to swap, PMT1 and PMT2 are the preferred candidates, the PMT2 has higher clutch holding pressure than the PMT1 but the 3-4 shift is quick... almost too quick. Shoot for a PMT1, but if you find a good deal on a PMT2 it's a good choice also. FWIW I have the PMT2 and I'm happy with it.

 

If it has a gpr and not a gpcm is that a definitive way to tell its not a cali truck?

 

Not on an Early 99. Mine is a CA model and has the relay, well now it has the Stancor, but it never had the module. Later ones, if they have the module, are CA trucks... I think!

Last time I talked to Jody (less than a year ago) he said the early computer is not capable of holding or processing the same amount of data and that's why you go to a later PCM.

 

what Andy said..the newer PCM will make the truck run better and shift better..lot more room to play with the newer PCM..Jody has come a long way with the early 99 PCM..if all your going to do is chip your DD... i wouldnt worry about the PCM..but if your going to tow or do big mod's..change it out..

 

Is the PCM what the DP plugs into? Are they completely plug and play or do you have to get them flashed first?

 

plug her in and have a chip made for it...or if you already have a chip send it back for a re burn..the chip goes into the PCM..click here
