I noticed daylight peeking in under the dash on my '76 the other day, so I took a closer look this morning and saw that the firewall is cracked in two spots where the parking brake pedal bolts up.
The brake was non-functioning when I got the truck, and after getting it working it felt like it was too tight, like the adjusters in the drums were seized up or something. After seeing those cracks I'd guess that some doughball was reefing on the parking brake pedal, and now I have a fractured firewall.
Anybody had to fix this area before? It seems like welding a patch would be the best way to go, but I've never tried welding sheet metal before. Riveting a patch in doesn't seem real sturdy. I was also wondering how thick a patch would have to be to stop the cracks once and for all.
