Dear friends,

I am experiencing some very frustrating fuel problems. I believe that I might have a bad front fuel pump. Every time I fill up the rear tank the front tank gets most of the fuel. The rear pump works like a charm but the problem is that only very little gas stay in the rear because most of the gas goes to the front tank which sometimes its front pump does not work well.

This is what I have done previously:

1.Change rear tank entire pump and its assembly.

2.Change front tank small chrome pump only.

3.Replace fuel circular filter by the big sending pump.

4.The fuel tank selector works well and gives me accurate gas level readings.

I truly just want to be practical and use one tank with the good working pump. I want to fix the problem correctly with out having to spend to much money. I just not working at this time so I have to be wise with my budget.

Can you please advise me as to how to do this procedure?

Also, is this safe to do? or do you guys have any other suggestions?

I forgot to mention. in the above post that the truck in question is an 86 f-150 super in ashot bed v8 FI

I'm not familiar with the Fi systems until a little later, but it would seem that the switching mechanism is not letting the fuel go to the other tank like it is supposed to. On my 88, it isn't uncommon for the valve to fail, putting gas in a different tank than it originated from. It would seem this is your case. The valve is not electrical, it is moved by pump pressure, but may have failed internally, causing the problem you describe.

It is that place just ahead of the tanks where the 4 lines from the tanks converge, and then two lines go on to the high pressure pump. It looks like it could be a filter, but it actually is a reservoir/switching valve.
