Mine is pretty much empty when it's right in the middle between 1/4 tank and E. Similar to Ben, when it's full it goes way past full. I also agree--just know your truck. Those little quirks give it personality. Part of the fun and experience of having a 30 year old machine.
Though, I wasn't paying attention last week and ran it way to dry and sucked some stuff into the carb off the bottom of the tank. That sucked!
Sorry for the double post--can't get the other one off now.

Reason: I'm a dummy
Mine runs out just after starting the thing up............ It only get about 6mpg, know matter how it's driven.
he gauge dosen't work. Yep It's left me along the road twice now. Was on the way to get gas both times...............
The gas gauge for me is like an idiot light. Good refernce, but the odometer never fails me. Pegged E on the rear tank means 4gal left. Note the rear is a new plastic tank and sending unit. When running the Cab tank, the gauge is completely unrelaiable, but it uses an original sending unit.
Not sure about my empty, since I've never ran it all out. I've had it down to a smidge above E and was fine. What I can tell you is that when the gas pump stops itself because my tank's full, the gauge only shows 3/4 full. So I'm wondering if I take it to a theoretical 1/4 below E if then I'll run out of gas? (j/k)
I know from experience when my gauge is exactly on "E" i have 2 gallons left in my in-cab tank which leaves me precisely 18 miles to find the nearest gas station lol.

you got it all figured out, why cant i do that....
It's all just a matter of knowing your truck well enough to know what quirks it has. .
Thats for sure!
Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to run out a 1\8th of a tank left. I've never filled it up so I can say where it goes on full, but it seems to work correctly otherwise.
My 67 goes down two needleswidth past empty then it runs out.
I like to know where I run out so I always keep a 5gal can in the back.
Yeah tell me bout it! If I ever actually went anywhere in my truck I wouldn't leave it back there, but all of my driving is "farm driving"(i.e. the trucks aren't yet tagged) So tecinically I'm never anywhere where somebody could steal it.
