Air filter

So I was rereading the june issue of diesel power and came across the $200 intake and exhaust article for a Cummins. They were installing this filterRE-0880 - K&N Universal Air Filters, Universal Rubber Filter I know its K&N I was just wondering if anybody had ever run one? Anyways I thought it was the K&N drop-in filters to stay away from. I really have no plans of installing one of these. Just wanted some real world input. Actually the one in the article had a mounting stud and filter minder but its basically the same I think.

I would avoid any K&N like the plague myself. 6637 is way cheaper than $200. But if you're willing to pay that for one, I've gone one I'll sell ya

i'm not sure about the filters ability to actually filter dirt (probably not that great) but i think the main problem with the K&N in our trucks is the inability for the drop in ones to seal tightly. IIRC the issue is that all the dirt gets around the filter.

That's the issue with any truck running a stock air box- the box doesn't seal well. I still don't trust the K&N filters regardless.

The filter is only like $52 bucks. The rest was the exhaust. I was just curious about them. Thanks.

What filter do people recommend? I would prefer to keep the original airbox...or is this a mistake?

Look into the 6637, you wont need to do anything to your box, except remove it, but you can keep it in the garage just the same. THe price is right, the performance increase is marginal, but the filtration is outstanding.

I'll just say this.

It is a big round air filter that is installed in place of the factory Ford setup that breathes a LOT better than the original design.
Here in the US it is available at NAPA under the part number: "6637".
You can get them at www.fleetfilter.com for a little more than half of that. Then you have to consider shipping.
I don't know what options you have in Australia.
Maybe this picture will help you in your quest.

Thanks for that, but is there any 'performance' filter that is reliable and fits in the original airbox? I am a believer in keeping things original (except for minor upgrades)

This is the 6637 with Pete's filter cover. Helps with keeping the filter clean.
