I have a 91 Ranger 3.0 that only clicks when key is in start position. Battery is good. Relay on fender is good. Cables all seem good. Starter does not work when tested on bench with booster cables. Does not turn, nor does drive engage. Shows no problems on disassembly. Has to be the solenoid on the starter motor right? I'm planning to buy a new one tomorrow. Someone please stop me if I'm doing the wrong thing. Thanks in advance.
That's most likely the case ,Russ.
(He did state the RELAY on the fender was good).
Plus,I can't remember them all.
He still needs to explain which one he actually replaced because he mentioned the non-starter function (off the vehicle) and saying the solenoid (relay) was already checked.

Sorry for not replying sooner, guys. I've been having trouble getting on here.? Hopefully this clarifies everything. I used the term "relay" for the solenoid on the fender because that's what the Hayne's manual I have on my desk calls it and I thought if I referred to it as the solenoid someone would reply and say "that's the thing on the starter". Anyway the "thing" on the fender was good as per the first post. The thing I consider the "drive" (the tiny gear/overrunning clutch assembly that engages the ring gear) was good. The "solenoid" on the starter (which moves the drive in and out and also contains the contacts) was bad. Replaced it. All's well now.
FYI, Pilgrim, you are using all the right terms THIS guy understands. A relay relays current, a solenoid generally causes some mechanical linear action as a result of current in a field surrounding a moving iron core. And, I would call the over-run clutch a "drive".
But who am I to say?
