Front axle shift fork
I have a 03 f-150 I just took it to the dealer cuz the 4X4 wasn't working, they told me I need a new shift fork in my front axle. Has anyone done it on there own, if so what are the steps and is there a website showing you how to do it. And should I even attempt it. The dealer wants $600 parts and labor, I can get the new fork and kit for $160 at the dealer, and help would be great.

Have you atleast, looked at the vacum acctuator( shift fork attachs to it) on the front diff?
Remove the black plastic cover,,and have a look,,,could be froze up,,with little use,,spray with fav pen oil and work it a bit.
You would feel pretty smart,,if you fixed it that easy,,,LOL,,,
On my son's 01' F-150,,acctuator was kinda stiff,,lubed it up,,atleast we new it worked,,,on his truck, (a manual shift 4x4 lever) his 4x4 did not work,,all it was is, when placed in 4x4, the transfer case was engaged but not the front end,,,it was the "oil switch" the electric switch in the transfer case that makes the "4x4" light in the dash come on,,,with out the light being triggered,,,the GEM module was'nt pulling the front diff acctuator in,,working great now for almost a yr already,,,,and this truck had 187 k miles on it when we got it !! He's getting closer to 200 k on this truck every day,,, it is a,

If you're getting the part for 160, they're charging you waaaay too much for labor!!!!!!!! They're charging you around 5 hours labor for a job that takes just over an hour.
Take it to a different dealer. or if your mechanically inclined, do it yourself. It's been 10 years since I did it but basically remove shift motor, split tube, remove broken fork and replace ---- if I remember right that is.

Ya I was told you have to remove the split tube, im doing it now, I'm just woundering what im going to excpect when i remove the split tube, how many gears and what not are going to fall out, I'm just scared that I can't get it back together and I'll feel sooooo stupid if i have to take it to a shop with little parts in bags and say "hey can you peace this back together for me. ha ha.
