I plan on swapping my 6.9 out of my 86 f250 for a newer engine. I found a powerstroke 7.3 from a 95 f350. Its just the engine, its complete except it doesnt have any accessories or wiring, no ecm, but it has the original Garrett turbo and downpipe. It only has 66,000 miles on the engine. The only defect is that it is chipped by where i guess the bell housing would bolt on. But the guy wants 1200$ for the engine...is that right?? I mean it would be hard for anyone to tell with out seeing it, but how much does an engine like this go in prime condition?
That would be quite a project you are taking on. $1,200 for the engine and turbo would be a good deal with that little milage.
I friend of mine had an early powerstroke (94/95) and he had his fair share of problems. I hear injectors on the early powerstrokes were not the greatest and had issues, not to mention the cost per injectior was pretty steep. (several $100 per injector)
Hopefully you are good with electronics as you will have a lot of work to do to get that engine hooked up and running in your old truck. I am not saying it can't be done, but it is a lot of work and money so I have not heard of to many guys trying this.
if you were dead set on doin this swap get a whole parts truck that has a power stroke in it so you can swap everything and not have to search around for parts because it gets expensive, a buddy of mine converted his 95 F-150 to a power stroke and bought a wrecked 96 dually and got all his parts off of it , he swapped the mounts complete wiring harness and dash as well as the motor ,and put a zf in it and it was originally a smallblock e4od truck, it as about a 2 week event after work and on the weekends, but man it paid off.
By the time you get it running and driving you probably could have rebuilt and turboed your 6.9L. You might have to get a used turbo but it would be a better set-up in my opinion.
1200.00 for the engine is about right but kind of high depending on where you live. Consider insurance auctions. I have 3 trucks from auction i bought on friday that I picked up to use as parts trucks for the fleet I operate. The deals are out there you just have to look. I see whole PSD trucks on craigs list for under 2200.00 a lot.
1998 Dodge 3500 quad cab 5.9 4x4 5 speed 108k (rollover) $1,700.00
2001 F-350 7.3 4x4 auto supercab 96k (frame damage) $ 1,340.00
2004 F-450 V10 auto 4x4 standard cab 19k (fire damage from gas in the bed) $1,900.00

the heck with the power-stroke swap, buy that dodge and swap in that cummins...or I'll buy that dodge...And I'll give ya $1800.00 !!!!!
I was on carpart.com today looking at cummins engines and in my area there askin $5000.000 just for the engine!...used!
Sorry guys the trucks are not for sale. I buy parts trucks to keep the fleet cost down. The 98 is a 12v and the engine is going in one of my service trucks that has blown its 12v for the third time.
The trucks a 97 F-800 5.9 12v it has 313,000 on it. the first engine went out in 2000 with 101k on it the second made it to 313k. It is what it is , nothing lasts forever. The allison trans is still running strong at 313k.
Good, I have three of those it's good to know they hold-up so well.
Thanks for the info.
I'm gonna eventually build a CrewCab out of my '91.5 Dodge and put one in it. Also thinking about putting one in my Wife's Suburban with a Cummins if the TBI 350 ever dies. We don't drive it hard but it has 205K on it and still runs great.
