o.k., help me understand this one.. a 2001 explorer sport. drivers door handle just broke. looks like it is only plastic. one of the small **** appears to have broken. why would something as important as the drivers door handle be made of cheap plastic? i guess that the whole door panel has to be removed to replace this handle. i am hearing that the door handle is a dealer item.
($ 85?).. w.t.f.? also looks like it will need to be painted as well. (more$)
is there an easier way? something does not seem right with this situation .. also.. i still have never been able to uncover the mystery of the keyless entry code.. i have looked in 4 different places.. its not in any of those places.. do i really have to pay ford more money to recover the code for me W.T.F.? AGAIN help me with this one polarisman
The driver's side door handle on my 2001 is about to crap out on me too. The handle itself isn't broken, it's just that sometimes I can't open the darn door from the inside.
I'm interested to see how the folks here suggest fixing your issue.
Got a '00, and just replaced the driver's exterior door handle. There are 2 tiny springs that break, and you have to replace the whole handle mechanism. Cost about $150... painted and installed at Maaco (got the part from Ford).
Keyless entry code: found mine in the back - near the jack.

I take it the handle assemblies come in primer color? Would it be cheaper to replace hem with the black ones? (even considering that you'd want to do 2 per side in black on a ST...)
Yes, primer color is black. And I thought about leaving it black, and replacing the back door on same side to match. That might have been a few dollars ($20 or so) cheaper, but for that price, I decided to make it look right.
