Cross Border Shopping

"Canada Customs" are a bunch of blood suckers. I just bought a cooling bypass filter kit for my 6.0 from Dieselsite.com. I just received it yesterday and haven't had a chance to install it yet. I'm looking forward to that part. Anyway I placed the order. Service was very prompt, looks like a great kit. Shipping was via UPS. Received in about 5 days. The price for the kit was about $120.00; shipping was $24.95. Seems like a good deal, especially with a nearly 1 to 1 exchange rate.... Then along came the "Canada Customs and Revenue Agency" and tacked on $47.00 in import fees. The part that sucks is, I'm not getting any value for my 47 bucks. Also you don't know what this fee will be until you receive what you order. Anyway just my two cents.

Don't know. I ordered different items from the states before, some automotive, some electronic and some just crap off of ebay. I've found in general anything automotive in nature, they hit pretty hard. The kit I just got had 39% added to it and the packaging had been opened and re-taped. I think it's just another money grab on our side.

Every country charges duties and taxes on imports. The idea is they want you to buy local and support the Canadian seller. (who has loyally supported the politician who in turn supports the duties & taxes). It is this way world wide. NAFTA was supposed to eliminate much of this between CA, US, Mx, but I guess it ain't working out in this case.

Don't you also have the "Value Added Tax" as well?

Can you buy that part locally or from a Canadian supplier? If not, you may take a shot at asking Customs if it was catagorized correctly. The guy filling out the commercial invoice (one of the shipping docs) might have put the wrong description or price.

Examine any papers that came with the box to see if it matches what you bought and paid.

Watch out shipping stuff internationally. They love to whack you for D&T. And don't think you can send your clothes ahead when travelling--you'll really get whacked for that unless you fill out a bunch of forms. Otherwise, you are now a textile importer, and those d&t are the amongst the worst.

As far as I know, I haven't seen anything like this from a local supplier. I can get replacement filters from Acklands Granger locally for about $11.00 each. As for the "Value Added Tax" we don't have that in Alberta. We don't have provincial sales tax either.
