I realize that for a lot of ya'll this is a hobby.
You've got money to play with.
I'm really not in that income bracket.
One of the main reasons I bought a PSD is because I figured it would last a long, long time.
Now I'm reading posts about replacing this and that for $3k here and $4k there. New engines $10k.
I'd like my '01 to last 20 more years.
So what kind of life can I expect out of mildly tuned engine ?
What mods increase longevity ?
What mods increase performance but shorten engine life ?
How many miles on your truck? Not only what kind of driving do you do but what kind of driver are you, fast slow, hard, easy? What ere your plans with this truck?
Welcome to FTE Chuck. That's a difficult question(s) to answer. A lot has to do with how you treat the engine, and some has to do with just random luck. If you drive 100,000 miles a year, your motor will not last 20 years without some complete overhauls.
In my worthless opinion, most (if not all mods) will do nothing to increase your engine life. They may not shorten the life , and they may increase the life of some of the components or just be a convenience mod, but I don't think they will extend the life of the engine. I think any mods that add power also carry the risk of shortening the life.
The best thing I can recommend for longevity is religious maintenance. Most of that is covered in the owners manual and supplements. The things not covered there can be found here.
Well, if you plan on owning a vehicle for 2+ decades and think that you aren't going to incur large dollar maintenance, you are being unrealistic. It is a fact that these trucks can probably last that long and more, but you are going to have to do more than oil, belts, brakes, and tires. I don't know of any 20 year old vehicle that was actually used on a regular basis and wasn't a trailer queen, that hasn't had to have major things replaced like transmissions, water pumps, rear ends, axles, and engines. These are big trucks and it takes money to correctly keep them up.
My truck is my main transportation and my only means of making fishing tournaments with my boat, so it is a little more than a hobby. Your driving habits and your maintance habits will be a major factor in the life of your engine. Give it clean air, clean oil and clean fuel, don't push the power mods too far and you will get the life you want out of it. I feel the the top line tuners like DP will not hurt your engine and may help it as it allows it to produce more power with less effort and less fuel. I know that mine has never towed as easily as it did this past weekend with my DP-Tuner.
I just bought a 2001 F250 4x4 with 130k miles.
The first thing I did is change the oil to Rotella Synth and sent off a sample of the old oil for analysis.
Hopefully this will give me an idea about the condition of the engine.
I'm waiting for the brown truck to deliver a new MBPR 4" exhaust, trans filter kit and a
Tru-Cool trans cooler.
When the piggy bank fills back up I'm probably going to buy a bypass oil filter kit, if that's what it's called, and a DP tuner. Not sure about a trans valve body.
I guess along the way I'll also be doing the 'free' mods, zoodad, pcv, fuel tank breather clip, etc.
My goal is to improve the efficiency of the engine & trans without shortening life.
The truck is a back-up for now but eventually we plan to buy a travel trailer and venture out 2-3 times a year. Probably 10-15,000 miles / year total.
No racing, no 'pulling', 4wd in bad weather only, 2k roll-ons grandma style.
This is the last truck I want to buy, no more payments !
Any other suggestions on what I can do to get longer dependable life ?
Hoping for another 200,000-300,000 miles.
gauges, a good air intake,4"exhaust, DP with a 40 and 60 tow..if your in flat lands then I would get an 80 tow as well...then put a WW (wicked wheel) in the turbo to give her a longer life... then do the in tank mod as well as regulated return..Or at least go with the CCK (crackle cure kit) to make the injectors last longer...i would do a VB to make the shift much better and the trans last longer..you can get a BTS or john woods VB for around $250.....
after that.its maintenance.. maintenance... maintenance....keep the filters and oil's clean.. when the link is up and running again..the mod's and fixes link in my sig will help you out along the way....
the WW is the compressor wheel inside the turbo..look in though the air intake hose and you can see it...with a chipped truck or if you tow heavy with the stock wheel..you will get what's called turbo surge..the wheel will stall out during boost and that stalling is very hard on a turbo bearings....the best fix is the $250 ATS housing..but the WW helps out most of us with mild tunes..here is the WW..much better write up on it http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...PROD&ProdID=47
there is only two differnt wheels for the stock turbo..a stock wheel..and the WW (witch happends to be a stock early 99 turbo wheel).... any other performence wheel like the one linked in my other post is a WW.. its just another seller and they have to change the name..none are better then the other..just the price....
I realise the ww is for the turbo, just unsure of which (engine or turbo) life is extended.
Would it be wirth me ordering one (superchips with 'tow safe' mode installed), as I am about to replace the pedestal o-rings. Does it give any performance benefit?
BTW, why are you up so late/early?

the WW helps save the turbo if you get any surge.. when it starts to surge you will see the boost gauge bounce and you will here what sounds like a pressure cooker doing its thing....very little SOTP gain down low cause it spool just a little faster...but you will loose it up top..you also get a nice little whistle out it with a strait piped exhaust...
I'm up at 4 AM every day....just happend to be 3 am this morning.
275K of daily driving and trailer hauling, Mods in sig. No major engine repairs. (unless you consider the AC compressor a engine repair) Trans is skeptical at the moment (but what do you expect out of a 275K mile stock tranny) I ve owned it since 2000, and plan to keep it for another 10 years(at least)
Any other suggestions on what I can do to get longer dependable life ?

Run the truck easy for the first 10-15 mins. That will give everything from your rods to the ring gear time to warm up and be ready to take a load. Steel isn't nearly as strong at cold temps. I put a water temp gauge in to replace the idiot gauge on the dash. Worth every cent warming up and keeping an eye on the heat in the summer.
203k and I have worked/hauled with this truck since I bought it new.....w/ 10k on it....yeah I have PMS but it only started after one of my kids graduated and I had a few more $$$ and a lot more time on my hands
WITH OUT A DOUBT Dp tuner was the most bang for the buck....tranny, 2 sets of rotors and pads....other misc stuff but all in all a great truck.
had synthetics in every thing since around 100k
Ron: when is that 17* hpop goin in ????....just got mine, waitin on you man.lol
