rear shock mounts

Installed a nine inch rear end from a another truck ; on my 48 f1. Now I'm preparing to make new rear shock mounts
I do not have any shocks yet but I was thinking of using shocks designed for an f150. Does this seem OK?
Also, I need to measure the shock so place the mount properly. Do I measure the distance between the mounts with the shock folly extended or some other position

I just welded shock mounts on my 8.8 rearend under my 53. I was able to find the original shocks for the 53. fully extended the shock measured 17 3/4". Fully closed measured 11 1/4". Everyone tells me that you want it mounted somewhere in between. I mounted mine at 14".
