Air filter advise

Hi everybody this is my first post, I have been reading all I can in the forums and everybody seems really nice. Here is what I have and the first problem I could use some help with. I purchased a used 2000 Ex limited with the v 10 and 77500 miles on it for $9500 in Missouri, it's in great shape with no damage in or out. Heres what I need advise on, the previous owner installed a K/N filter I have used these in the past and had good luck with them. I have read all the dabates about them and do not wish to get that whole discussion started again. What else the guy did is drill holes about the size of your little finger all over the top part of the filter housing directly over the filter. He said that he did this to increase the amount of air. My question is this good or bad, do I need to replace this back to original. I was thinking if I had to replace this going with a Banks ram air intake. Any help on this would be greatly appreacated. Looking forward to your replys.

Holes don't help anything. They may have your engine ingesting hotter air. Tape 'em up or replace the housing.

Each poster to this thread will have an opinion about the K&N. I happen to prefer paper.

I can't imagine those small holes on a certain area of the filter housing making any positive change to performance. Either cut the entire housing off to make a home made FIPK (site search) or tape up the holes and go "fctory" or make a cold air induction system.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was thinking the same thing about it getting hot air from the motor. I will probaly go back with a stock housing, where would be a good place to ordor one from? Also what is everybodys opinion on the Banks Ram Air intake.

Check the stock air box - it already has two big holes in the bottom. At least, mine does from the factory.

I prefer paper too. $22 from Napa and I change mine every 15,000 miles.

I think that was due to the inlet size, I used an airbox off a 5.4 triton, outside piece only, it had a 3.5 inlet opening, added a 3.5 inch fresh air tube & put in back in , fits perfect into the opening by the rad, then did the famous zoodad mod. I think it works as good as the "banks" air box for sure
