Hey guys. I have a chance to grab a couple of 79 grill shells. Actually, the guy said I could take the whole assembly--insert, headlight buckets and all for $100 per grill assembly. He has two 79's sitting there.
I have four or five sets of good headlight buckets and a spare grill insert already--(though you can never have too many parts!) But, the aluminum grill surround is what I'm really after, as mine has a pretty big dent in each side. These ones are strait and ding free, but they are oxidized and have some scratches.
Does this still sound like a good deal? Do you think they will clean up with a good buffing? I don't want to spend money on something if I can't get it looking good--but I'd also rather not spend the $550 DC wants for a new one.
I used the diamond brite truck box by better built polish from lowes on my grille and it didn't make it perfect but it made it look alot better so you might could try doing that if you decide to get it.
It's an excellent deal. $100 is what'd you'd pay for a used, banged up one. $200 for a used one in good shape. Around $250 for the foreign ones that don't fit, I believe. And about $550 for DC reproductions, which currently aren't being manufactured because of issues with the aluminum cracking when they try to stamp them. I'd say go for it, even if you don't need them because they're harder and harder to come by especially without dents in them.
I wish we could find a small shop that had the equipment to repair and buff these old shells for a reasonable price like $200.00 plus shipping.
I think we could keep him busy.
When I bought my last truck, the guy had a new, never used grill shell and new front fender, both from Ford. I gave him $100. I wish i could find more deals like that.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'll go ahead and grab them. It might not be for a few weeks though, but the guy told me they're not going anywhere. See, I discovered the trucks sitting at an old garage while out on a motorcycle ride, so they're quite a few miles away and I have some busy weekends coming up.
Ben, once I get them I'll be glad to snap some pics for you. No need to raise the price for you--If I pay $100, you pay $100. I'd just be glad to help you out!

I'll try that stuff on them. They really are nice and strait and worth trying that on I think..just 30 years worth ot weather and ware on them.
It's too bad the PO put dings in both sides of mine, because otherwise it shines like a new penny!
I'd grap em too. If they are straight, you can de-anodize the aluminum, sand and buff the shells to make look good again. There are some threads around hear that talks about it. However, once you de-anodize the aluminum, it will keep fading unless you put some sort of clear coat or something on them.
I disagree about make shine on grill. I have one it pain to look at it when sun is shine off grill.
I say several drivers was angry when my truck's bumper and grill shiny to them.
I can see shiny when I drive pass sign like road speed limit or close road's sign.
Plus I bought grill for $75 it used but better shape than my bang grill by car accidental and loader. Have no time to replace so I think in winter will replace that.

I'll search for those threads. Thanks for the info. Do you recomend a particular product to coat them with, or should I just look for that in the search?
