Question C6 tailhousing removal?

Hey guys, I have a C6 that I'm workin on. First off it's been sitting a while I'm not sure how long? I was told when I bought the engine and trans that it was good. I have a few questions? First I have taken out the input shaft, and stood the trans up on the bell housing. Is that a problem or am I messing up anything? I needed to take tha pan off and didnt have another way of getting to it.

Second, I want to remove the tail housing to clean it up. Can I just unbolt it and remove it or will I tear up a gasket or something?

3rd, how do you adjust the modulator valve? The main reason I ask this is that the screw looks to be backed out quite a bit? I'd like it to shift firm as possible. I'm unsure of the condition of the trans so I'm hesitant to put in a shift kit as of now.

Thanks for the help guys

It's ok to remove the input shaft.
I hope you saw which end was which.
There are different length splines.
The longer ones go inside the transmission.
There is a gasket between the housing and case and very well could tear.
For firmer shifts the screw should be turned in.

Hi,
First I want to ask how you removed the input shaft without removing the pan. It's been a while since I have been into a C6, but as I recall, you can't just pull the shaft out of the front without getting into the inside first. Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. The only thing I can think you could remove is the stator support which is the hollow splined shaft that the input shaft is inside of. Maybe a picture of what you have done so far would help. I am also not clear as to why you would want to remove the input shaft.

As for the tail shaft housing, there is a rather thin gasket and it used to be available seperately from most good parts suppliers. I'd try NAPA. It will probably tear apart when you take off the tail shaft housing. If the fluid is clean in the tranny I doubt there is any reason to take off the tail shaft housing. If you do take it off I would put in a new tail shaft bushing. That is a long composite metal bushing that acts as a support bearing for the drive shaft. It is pressed in.

The vacuum modulator should be replaced if this tranny has been laying around for a while. If you put in a new one the adjustment screw will probably be about midway. This is something you will have to adjust to your liking. I can't remember which way does what but in one direction it will cause the shift to be a bit harder and it will have to be at a bit higher RPM to shift. It is kind of a drive and adjust thing.

I strongly recommend you put in new rear and front seals. The TC is also important so if you don't know if the one you have was working good and whether it has been laying around open, I'd go for a new or better one that you know about.

Like I said, some pictures might help here. I'm a little rusty as it has been around twenty years since I've had a C6 apart. I've done several C4 rebuilds and they were just as long ago. About the best guide I have found for these transmission jobs is the Ford service manuals for these jobs. Depending on the age of the transmission, you might find that someone on the forum here can help you with that. Whenever I buy a new or almost new vehicle I order the manual set from Ford. It has been a while since I did that and it was about $200.00 the last time. That got me about 50 pounds of books. The old Chilton and Motor Manuals were a very close second as far as help is concerned. That may be all you can get your hands on. Nowadays they put all this stuff on CDs so it may be that someone out there knows a source or has something they can copy for you. There also may be some online sources. I hope this is of some help to you. If there is anything else I can do to help let me know here, by PM or e-mail. Good luck with the tranny.

C4 & C6 input shafts can be removed without taking anything else apart.
Removing the shaft is wise if the transmission is being stood on it's nose.
I have seen cases where it was not removed, pulled out a bit as the transmission was being stood up and making new splines in the forward drums.

Hi Stuart.
Like I said, it's been a while... For some reason that is the way I had it in my mind. Can't say why. Maybe I'm confusing it with another tranny. I don't do a lot of them and when I do I gotta use the books. Although I have had success with all of them, it just takes me a while longer. It sounds like you are the guy to help Truxx here.
