Trannie Slippage Issues

Ok, tranny started slipping yesterday while pulling the boat to and from the lake. Once it gets into a gear it's fine, but while shifting between gears it slips a good bit. I think the torque converter might be going out? Sounds like it's time for a new one....

Does anyone have personal experience with a transmission builder in the SC/NC area? I'm willing to drive a little bit to have it done right the first time. I'll need it to be able to hold around 400hp comfortably.

I'd be willing to trade a set of train horns that I haven't put on my truck yet towards the cost of the tranny.

These are the same ones Hornblasters.com sells here:
Nathan K5LA AirChime (K5 Low Mount American Tune) Train Air Horn. Authentic Railway-Use Train Air Horn

Let me know what you got, let's make a deal! Feel free to call my cell 803-730-9085 if you want to chat.

Almost forgot... the transmission is an automatic 4r100 out of a 2003 F-250 4x4 without PTO

Before my tranny takes a dump, I am going to BTS in Arkansas to get it done right. Do a search on BTS trans and you will see what people think of this.

Get it done before you have to drag it somewhere.

Good luck.

I looked at BTS, but that's about a 9 hour drive for me....last thing I want to do is drive my truck 9 hours with a transmission going out to get a new one. Plus, they are a little more than I want to spend....I think somewhere in the $4200 ballpark

They are about the same distance from me. I am also looking at that HP range and I want a trans that I feel really sure can handle that.

But I know what you mean about the $$$$. Good luck with this.

Well, for comparison, when my tranny took a dump, I got a ford reman, a Precision industrries torque converter, and a BTS valvebody. IIRC that was in the 3500 range installed. The P/I is a grand itself. The dealers parts/service area is really good to me, so while they had it apart, they put in the T/C and did the pump mods for me, and told me theyd still cover it under warrenty. Then I added the BTS VB about a week later.

you know that you have now voided that warranty with the BTS VB, unless you have it worked out with your service manager. right? i had a ford reman (their supposed HD design with 3yr/75K and no exception for mileage or GVWR) and i specifically asked the service manager about that. he said specifically, if it didn't come as part of the reman assembly, and i install it, no warranty. i planned on doing it anyway, but keeping my old core, incase, and swapping it back out if i had to take it back to the dealer for service. i'm undecided right now, cause i've had a couple of issues with reverse delay and stalling while hooked up to my trailer and backing uphill.

now with your better TC and the BTS VB you may have no reason to be worried. just thought i'd mention the warranty thing, just in case. my service manager was really cool, we shot the shiiite a while and he said that if i put a chip on it, or VB, or whatever, just make sure it's not on the truck when i bring it in. said that they had been audited, or whatever he called it, and were being watched closely on warranty work. i took my truck by the other day to ask about the reverse delay, and i don't think he works ther anymore. the new guy seems cool, but i was weary of broaching the subject of aftermarket stuff and warranty. if i'd only been able to swing the BTS. i had to have my truck back ASAP (like 3 days tops) and didn't have much option.

Kevin, good story. The thing with BTS is, Brian don't care if you drag race, truck pull with it. He says it will take that kind of power. He will fix it if it brakes, no questions asked. He will also ship one to you, and you return your core. I have their VB now, so he will take the price of that off the top. Great people.

yeah i know. if time weren't the biggest issue i'd have gone that route. wasn't sure how long i'd be without my truck waiting for him to build one, and ship it to me. the ability to run a tuner/chip with no worries is why i wanted it, besides being built so well.
i HAD the edge juice/attitude combo, and i only bought that cause the guy gave it to me dirt cheap. ran that for a few months, and hmmmmm, suddenly my tranny went out. anyway sold that POS and i'm stock tuned right now, but want the DP so bad i can taste it. i planned to drive with this new tranny a few miles to see if all was well, and i'm at 25k on it now, and was getting ready to do either the JWVB or BTSVB. i don't have guages yet, since i had the edge i didn't need them, so i still have to get gauges, VB, and DP. just with the housing market being as slow as it is, works been slower. My Dad and Brother in law own a company building custom high end modular, panelized, stick built, whatever basically homes. but theres not much selling right now. i am a general contractor and also have my own company building decks, covered porches, diggng/pouring footings, etc, and they hire me to do the aforementioned jobs. i also pull double duty, in that they contract me to provide supervisory services. so if we're not selling much, there ain't much extra disposable income. i know its like that for everybody, but at the moment its keeping me from being able to remedy this PMS.

Sure looks like you are ready for gauges and DP. You have everything else to support it. I know what you mean about things slowing down. The price of corn and fuel, is slowing the feed business down also. Things will get better, one day.

2 things.

1. BTS will install it for free if you bring the truck there. OTOH, you can have him ship the trans to you and have your local guy install it.

2. $4200 buys a lot of peace of mind IF you plan to keep the truck. He has a 2 yr no hassle warranty. That means in 2 yrs, if your trans breaks he fixes it. You have to pay for the R&R. After 2 yrs, you have to pay shipping. Either way, he takes care of you. No excuses and void of warranty because you race it, snow plow with it, etc, etc. Either way, it is the last one you are paying for.

He even did that for me SIGHT UNSEEN. He knew my VB was sitting in burnt fluid that was really hot for over 100 miles and he gave me credit without seeing it. I wouldn't have, would you?

Yep, I completely understand that. That is why I also kept my core, just in case haha. But I havent had any issues yet, (knock on wood) and its been there for almost a year now. Between the P/I and BTS VB I should be good for stock sticks, and ACs when I go to replace the stockers.
