Yeah, that "limp" mode is great.

I honestly think the allison is way over rated, and it gets quite expensive to make them hold after 400-500 HP or so.

Now a Cummins with a 6 speed or a built up 727 w/ over drive, that would be sweet

My friend/hunting guide in northern Alberta says that many of the oil guys that bought brand new Dmax's said that the Allison failed in severe cold weather. Something to do with an internal pump freezing up or something?? Apparently a fair bit of warranty work and recalls with that tranny? Never validated it myself, just what I heard.

Deerman, don't worry about offending anyone about destroking either. JTharvey on this site is doing just that with many waiting eagerly for the results!

Ditto, and again ditto on the colds weather failures in alberta.

The Allison tranny is simply not what people think. Kind of like people think caterpillar engines in an f250 would be the best idea since sliced bread.

GM and Chev trucks, dont get me wrong, they are nice, and powerful. They are not as tough as a Ford. Ford and dodge are the leaders in rough tough, hard to bluff work trucks, with ford leading in the "longevity" department.

Allison tranny's are nothing special, I know one guy who has his second allison in his truck, and he just broke about 120k miles. I've also heard about failures along the alberta oilfield, among GM chev vehicled not being allowed on some work sites because of the built in onstar.

Funny thing is, I've heard time, and time again, workers complimenting the allison transmission, because allison makes some drilling rig transmission and they think their GM truck is gonna be just as tough because of the little logo on the side.

My opinion is, that the duramax should be called a "light truck, medium duty" diesel, and that the allison is an awesome transmission, but nothing I'd consider swapping to, even if it was free.

(Although i f I had NO transmission, and got a free allison, end of story)

I'll stick with my Ford/IH combo myself. I'm not interested in making crazy horsepower, I just want a solid tow rig that will last.

Every Allison that i had in my big trucks never failed, 20 plus years worth. My cousin and countless other of his knucklehead Duramax buddies never had a problem with there trannys as far as i know and they beat the hell out of them. Guess its a northern cold thing I'll keep mine too.

i like the idea. I really like my 7.3 but a buddy of mine has a 05 d-max and the allison is soooooo smooth. I dunno though, if i got my 4r100 built by BTS or something it might be smooth too, and i have less than half into my truck...he bought his new. As for toughness, i am normally a chevy guy, but the IFS on those trucks i really dont like. Ford is wayyy tougher for off roading, hands down.

Everything on a Ford is better than a Chevy. I have one for work and I hate that POS with a passion (it's a gasser to boot).

Allison is a wonderful and trusted name in tranny's and gearboxes, but in the GM trucks, I think it's just mostly a marketing ploy. The tranny has been tweaked out of the traditional Allison comfort zone, so it's more of name selling than anything. Unless you're talking about an Allison from a bigger truck.

It's from the same marketing bunch that decided to call the motor Duramax instead of Isuzu, or UD.

As for me, I'll just keep my old handshaker. Fewer worries that way. For the motor, there's a lot to be said about a straight 6.

Yeah I can't vouch for the allison thats in the dmax's. everyone that I know that has one has had replacements and more problems. I hate the delay between shifting from reverse to forward. . . makes getting out of the mud very difficult. That tranny ended up in limp mode the next day too. . . hmmm

The Allisons in the pickups have nothing at all in common with their ones for the heavy duty segment. The Allison badge on the side of the trucks is just a gimmick, like it has been said. I think it was just GM jabbing back at Dodge for them having the "Cummins" name
