Ignition Coil Problem?

Like an idiot I left the keys in my ignition, turned to the on position, overnight (the car was not running). Of course the battery was dead the next morning. I had the battery charged. The car does start; however, it idles very sparatically and eventually dies. I have heard that leaving the keys in the position will burn out the ignition coil. Does this sound like a logical assumption. Would the coil cause the car to run like that and eventually die. If not, can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ignition Coil Problem?

Hi, welcome aboard.

I do not think that this could cause your coil to fail. What year truck and type of ignition do you have? If you have the ignition amplfier "box" common to these trucks, I could see it possibly being damaged by this. VERY hard to tell.

I would not be surprised that if after you run the truck awhile and get the battery charged up fully that this problem goes away. It could be that at idle your alternator is not putting out enough to power a truck with a dead battery.

Good luck,
Lee
