I just bought a '90 F-150 and noticed that the back-up lights didn't work. So after researching the problem I noticed that the wiring to the switch was disconnected from the manual transmission. I re-connected the wiring to the switch and when I put the transmission in reverse it blows the fuse every time. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I looked at the wiring and it seems to be fine. Bulbs are OK. Any help would be good. Thanks.
Do you have a multi-meter ?
If so, grab a 20 ft length of wire to help but, you need to do some continuity checks.
I would start at one end with switch wires dis-connected.
Pull out one of the bulbs. Test with the ohmeter from ground (clean metal) to both contacts. One side will be connected to ground, the other side should not be. If this is ok, put the transmission in reverse and check for a short to ground. The wire that supplies 12v to the lamps is probably shorted to ground.
