Is it worth spending the extra money on more expensive shocks for my truck? Been looking at shocks, a set of the cheapie Monroes will run me about $88, or I could pony up a little extra for something like the Sensa-Trac, or even Skyjacker shocks ($135 shipped off ebay).
Over several factors yes. Bilsteins will be my choice of shocks for quite a while. Where the cheaper shocks save money is in raw materials and technology. The seals aren't quite as good, the valving may not be as precise, they may not have any reactive valving, may be valved by bad theory instead of quality experiences.
It all adds up to, cheap shocks are ok for a shorter amount of time, while quality (not necessarily more expensive) shocks will ride the same much longer.
I just installed KYB gas adjust on my bronco. They are way better than monroe gas magnums that were on it. Bilsteins were too much but everyone likes them, Kyb seemed like everyone liked them on most reviews I read. Rancho had the biggest mix reviews most leaning to a rough ride.
Kyb is a pretty decent shock company but I don't like their whole line. They do have a range between your mother's honda's shocks and higher performance shocks. We've tried several of their adjustables and they can be good shocks.
Having run several sets of Bilsteins on a F250 crewcab and an Expedition. I feel that the Bilsteins are overrated. I know I will crusified for saying that but of the 8 I have purchased 3 failed within 15,000 miles. I have switched to the Monroe Reflex. It may not be the best shock in the world but so far it has performed flawlessly and ride is excellent as well. Just my 2 cents
I really don't know for sure what went wrong. It was 2 of the fronts and one of the back ones. On the back one I think the rod either bent or broke and it wouldn't move. I replaced the 2 back ones first. The 2 front ones had started leaking. I probably got close to 20,000 out of them. All of them were on my F250.
