Surging Problem
My 48 Ford F1 is surging and dying going down the road but only sometimes.not all of the time.if i pull the choke out it picks back up but onlyfor a minute and then surges some more. i checked the fuel bowl and cleaned it going to the pump.i have not pulled the carb apart yet but could that maybe be what is wrong?it is the original carb from 48 with the metal tag still on it.any suggestions or solutions would be much appreciated.thanks

First off, 48panel, welcome to the forum. Glad to have you. It sound like the engine is starving for fuel because it gets better when the choke is pulled out. It could be trash in the fuel lines, in the carb, in the tank or the fuel pump could be starting to give up. I would recommend stopping next time it starts to surge and check the fuel bowl (I'm guessing you have the glass one just before the carb), if the fuel bowl is empty, the the problem is up stream from there. If the fuel bowl is full, then I would suspect the carb. Hope this helps. I'm sure others will respond with some ideas and trouble shooting procedures. The other possibility is vapor lock, how long after the engine is started before the surging begins. What is the engine temp.?

Well......pulling the choke out reduces the air coming into the engine......so if reducing the air eliminates the surging...... then you are either getting too much air... vacuum leak maybe around carb base or cracked vacuum line............. Or too little gas..... plugged line, filter, carb as suggested above....... IMHO probably a gas problem. My 2 cents worth.

check the gasket at base of carb with engine running, put some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray around the base of carb, if it sucks the bubbles in under carb, replace the gasket, you can chack the vacuum lines the same way.

Welcome to the forum, the truck your refering to is the panel? That's a beauty I'd love to see more pictures of it. Anyway,how long has it been doing this surging? You might have a simple problem like bad gas, the way gas is going anything is possible..... You could try draining the tank, it might get rid of someting bad. You could disconnect fuel line from fuel pump to carb. and have someone hold a can to catch gas and see how strong that pump is. Your old carb. may also need a rebuild, there are rebuild kits available or there are places that will exchange you for a rebuilt one. There is a member 49Bob or Bob49 who has a panel like yours and is really sharp on them, he could probably give you some pointers on your alternator problem as well. Maybe he will respond-Good Luck

well thank you everyone for the suggestions.i will try a couple things tomorrow, (being laid off has some benifits), after i figure it out hopefully i will let everyone know.i did pull the top half of the carb to clean the bowl and blow out the jets, and the gasket looked pretty bad, but it didnt register.as for the pictures i will post the link to them into my signature,for you dylan :-).

48-panel, welcome to the forum! while carb is off, check fuel lines for cracking. the new fuel can, and does, eat up rubber much quicker than most think. it also woudn't hurt to put 1 oz. of marvel mystery oil in EACH tank of fuel. this will lube entire fuel system and keep valve system clean, also protecting valve seats.

i got the carb back today and i put it back on.i thought all was good but then i got down the road and sure enough when it warmed up , the surging BEGAN!!! grrr..... i checked the fuel bowl as soon as it surged and died and it was full.im stuck.
