I have a 1994 7.3L IDI in an F-250 that was recently stolen. I recovered it (at least some of it) and now have a starting problem - won't start without using starting fluid. Once it's running, it runs perfectly and will re-start once it's been fired up for the day. I figure the homies tried to drain fuel out of it. Other than trying to find where there is air getting into it, is there anything else to check? The mechanical lift pump is new, and it has brand-new solid supply and return lines the tank - I figure it has to be something between the fuel filter and injectors.
My '86 WILL NOT START W/O GLOW PLUGS!!!!!! Not sure about my '94 as the plugs haven't gone out yet.
Try plugging in the block heater tonight, if it starts easy in the morning you can bet it's the glow plugs.
Also you don't want the glow plugs to be in operation when using starting fluid.
Some guys have also broken pistons using it.
Look at the fuel return lines (hoses) between the injectors. If they are painted gray replace as they are letting air into the fuel system and letting fuel drain back towards the tank.
