Has anyone has this problem??

I've got a '92 F150 Supercab 4x4 Longbox 302 w/ E4OD. It's got 135,000 miles on it. She runs good and shifts good. My problem is the tachometer. When the truck is off the needle is at 0, like it should be. But when I start the truck the needle immediately goes to 2,500 RPM. (The truck isn't running at 2,500 RPM, the tachometer just says it is.) When I accelerate it works normally above 2,500 RPM, but won't go below the 2,500. Does anyone know what would cause this and/or how I could fix this?

Wouldn't that suggest the coil is going out? Seeing as how the tach gets its reading off the coil.

I am also interested in this. Mine doesn't do it, but I have seen it on F150s and Rangers etc. I think my friends Mustang also does this.

Question Has anyone has this problem??

Texas Guy,,, Well then add Mine to that list....I have never seen a tach, do this??? About the Tach RPM sensor. I thought they were only on Diesels??? And about the coil,,, The only problem I've hade with a coil going out is when they start to give me hard or no start when engine is warmed up and shut off then it is either hard to re-start or will not fire at all do to the internal primary windings & secondary windings shorting out when hot, The truck runs fine. its just got a case of the Wacky Tachy ... l'll will check the connector plug on the coil Primary wires and its terminals see if they are corroded and clean them up. Does anyone know if these the only wires to the tach on a 92 --302 FI. Or does it also read off something else???? The only other thing I can think of is the Tach head in the inst. cluster..... Little PIA to take out Big PIA to Pay for $$$.$$.......Any Ideas appreciated .......Thanks

Tach signal comes from the coil on the gas motors. I'd say a problem with the terminal or the wiring. Less likely is a circuit paper problem with the instrument cluster or a coil that's on its way out.

Thumbs up Has anyone has this problem??

Thank you Virto,,,,,, For the tach signal info, Thats, where I'll start Connector and terminals then wires if needed. as I said she runs fine, Performance what you would expect from a 302 FI 4x4 SC Long box. Just wish I could get better MPG (12 mpg) or Gas that does not cost an arm and my other leg
