How do I know which tranny I got?

When I bought the truck off this guy he said it was a newly rebuilt tranny. How do I know which one it is? Im readin through these threads and seein several kinds.

Post what your truck is and whether auto or man. Also click on the Tech Info at the top of the forum for more information.

3spd without overdrive = C6
3spd with overdrive = AOD
4spd with overdrive = E4OD

Or you could look at the code on your door sticker, as aforementioned.

AOD and E4OD are both four speeds, with fourth being overdrive...

The AOD was gone after '93, replaced by the AODE or 4R70W. If you can't read the door plate for some reason, there are pics here, just scroll down a bit, then click on the other transmission sections to the left.
The C6 will look the smallest, 4R70W a bit longer in the main case, the E4OD is much larger.

well it aint the c6 then seeing how it does have OD. That narrows it to a E4OD or the AOD

Count the number of pan bolts that hold the transmission pan on.

20 bolts = E4OD
14 bolts = AOD/AODE/4R70W
17 bolts = C6

She's got 20 bolts holdin the pan on. looks like its an E4OD. Thanks for the help to all those who responded.

im trying to figure out the same thing my truck is a 96 f150 5.0l v8 need to know if the tranny is a AOD or E40D
