Hey guys...kinda stumped on this one and looking for some help and advice. I decided to check the timing on my 250 today. Located the mark on the damper and highlited it with white. Removed the spout connector, and hooked up the timing light to #1. I was unable to locate the timing mark. After messing around a bit i lined up the damper and timing indicator and pulled the dizzy cap. The rotor was aimed at #7.... I hooked the light up to #7...low and behold, i could see the mark...it was within 1 degree or so of where it should be set. The spout had the factory tape seal around it so it doesnt look like the timing has been checked/set before. I also double checked the plug wire routing and it is correct. Any ideas? Thanks much!! Shaun
There have been a few counts of the outer ring on the dampner moving, spinning around the inner part. That could have happened to you. Put #1 at TDC and pull the cap, if it looks good i wouldnt worry about it.
Pull #1 plug and get it to TDC.. if b doing it by your self, use soem paper to cover plug hole.No need to pack it on, but do put it so that it creates a seal. Bump motor over until paper blows out, then line the 0 up to timing pointer, with socket on balancer bolt The rotor should be lined up with the #1 on cap. If it rotate motor back a few degrees and stick a screw driver in the plug hole. Rotate motor over( by hand) and feel screwdriver, it should come up , pause for a second the start down. Once it comes up and pauses should be 0* on balancer. If not more-N-likley yor balncer has spunn(outer ring) and will need replacing. Plus a spun balancer may cause a vibration in motor.
UPDATE: Thanks for the replies guys However that was a MY BAD, lol. I didnt realize there was other marks on the damper....further cleaning and inspection located them, DOH! I thought the big cast line in the damper was the factory mark, didnt know it had all degree marks as well. I set it to 12 degrees but have some slight pinging under load with my landscape trailer hooked up, may have to back it down to 10. Thanks again! Shaun
