I found a complete turbo on a 6.9 in a salvage yard. The turbo is tight and spins freely wiht no play. It is still on the engine and the price is good. Would this be a direct bolt-on for my 7.3 and what would I need to do to make it work?? Thanks in advance!!
yes, it is a direct bolt on. the only thing you may need is a different y pipe if the transmissions are different.
make sure you take everything associated with the turbo, like mounting brackets, hoses, oil lines, exhaust parts, air filter assembly, and the boost and pyrometer gauges if they are on it.
Thanks! I read something here recently where someone had an oil leak and it was because they put a turbo on but didn't put holes in the valley pan. I'm pretty sure that's how it read. Is this the case or not?
there is a hole in the valley pan that the CDR valve is in. you remove the CDR valve, and mount it in another place, and the turbo oil outlet goes into that hole.
I went to the salvage yard and looked at the turbo setup again. The truck is an 84 and it doesn't have the CDR setup or the mount for the glow plug relay. It has a different setup for the glowplug harness and it mounts to something on the back of the drivers side of the engine. I have no idea what the part is. So, will it still work on my 7.3 and if so can I just fabricate brackets or is there something else I need to know??
Do I need to change anything else? I have new glow plugs and the pump is working well. I did find a rebuilt pump on one of the salvage yard trucks but it is a 6.9. Is it the same as the 7.3??
The drivers side rear of the engine thing on the 6.9 is the coolant temp sensor/controller for the glow plugs.
The glow plug relay is behind the passenger side battery with a couple large orange wires on it.
You will have to make a bracket to move the 7.3 relay/controller over so the down pipe clears the turbo.
