Does the 4X4 switch work? What is your year make and model? You could have a transfer case shift solenoid, or motor issue. When is the last time you had the transfer case fluid drained?
It's a 99 Expy 4.6L and I just got it a few months ago for $1,200. The 4x4 switch works and it does engage the 4 wheel drive. I have no idea when the tranfer case fluid might have been changed if ever.
Well, you have a couple of options here. One, I would go down to Autozone or somewhere, and have them pull the codes. Two take it to Ford...Three, when you pull the codes, come back here, post them and I bet someone here can decipher what the codes equate to...
Also, are all four tires the same size and display similar tire wear?
Good luck
Checked the tires all 4 are identical, Autozone found only 1 code and that was PO401 - EGR System I found the vac lines dry rotted and replaced everything is fine there now. It would act funny between 55-65 mph after it warmed up but since the vac line repair it drives like a champ. The 4x4 engages fine in 4H and 4L. Maybe I just need to drain the fluid in the transfer case and refill it. Any other suggestions?
It could also be a speed sensor for the automatic 4 x 4. There are sensors that look for a difference in the speed of the front wheels compared to the rear wheels. I have not had this problem but have read on here about it and replacing those speed sensors has helped. I don't know if the smaller readers will go that deep on some of that stuff. Just thought I would mention it.
