i have a 1990 f250 7.3 turbo with a 40ed can i tow in od with about 10 k camper my buddy has a 01 v10 with an auto in it his manual say to tow in overdrive i dont want to take a chance with out knowing its ok to do so thanks for ur help
I tow in OD, though I watch my trans temp gauge on the hills.
Do you have a temp gauge or a bigger/additional trans oil cooler?
If your set up is stock, without a temp gauge I would be concerned, because when the TC slips the temps climb quickly. Tough to know when to back out of it without a gauge.
If your transmission hasn't been upgraded you may have troubles. Stock torque converters and earlier trans were prone to problems. I have a multidisc tc that I had put in my truck, the PO had the trans replaced, but I don't know when, but since my truck is a later 93 model, I assume the replacement trans was an upgraded unit. I fully agree with the previous post on getting a temp guage and a big trans cooler installed, otherwise you will always be questioning if it will make it?? I towed a 7000 lb load over the Rockies from Alberta to the coast, left in in OD most of the time, petal to the floor whenever I came to any kind of a hill, kick down like you would any other automatic to keep the rev's up - was happy with the performance and no problems or excessive temps. I don't have a turbo, but a big exhaust pipe, headers, and cranked up fuel, ram air.
I also have a triple disc TC, and it NEVER slips when locked up. Towing in OD with the TC locked the trans does not seem to go beyond 160 in 50 degree air temps, towing or not.
In stop and go traffic the trans oil will increase rather quickly.
Frankly, I would not feel comfortable driving (much less towing with) an auto trans truck without a temp gauge. It should be factory installed.
Big cooler and a temp gauge is the quick solution. I run an additional cooler after the factory air/oil cooler that is on a thermostat that opens when the oil out of the factory air/oil cooler hits 170. I don't think I have ever seen trans temps beyond 195 with this set up.
The better TCs will go along way to keeping you cool with much weight behind you.
You are probably ok leaving it in OD. I don't really feel comfortable without a gauge, but that's just me. My dad has an e-450 13,000 lb. motor home with a V-10. He does not have a gauge in it and tows his Jeep Grand Cherokee across the rockies at 55 MPH in OD. He seems to do fine.
The only way to know if you know is to try it I guess.
