Complete melt down

I'm trying to figure out why my old engine melted down. I swapped out the engine after the original one melted down. The left bank got so hot that it stuck three pistons. The right bank had to be running fine. All the pistons were fine and the melted damage to the glow plug wires and valve cover gasket was only on the left bank. How can that happen? I don't want the new engine to go out like that.

This is my theory.. I do't know much but, Is it possible that the IDM or PCM would possibly be telling the injectors on one bank to dump way more fuel then the other. From what I know of how diesels opperate is the more fuel you push the hotter it runs, unlike gasers the more the cooler it runs.

Anybody have any ideas why that would happen?
O Ya only 115K miles.............

Could it also be potential pluggage inside the screen on the right bank's rail port fitting? I only mention this because I don't know if you were running a reg return which would minimize the potential impact of any such pluggage.

Sounds to me like a coolant blockage only on that side. Were you running the correct long-stem 'stat?? The short stem will fit, but won't direct the flow properly through the block. But I would expect both sides to overheat, and most likely the rear of the engine.

Which pistons melted??

Theres supposed to be jets that squirt oil on the bottom of the pistons to cool them. If the get loose or blocked, the pistons could overheat.

Do you still have your original blown engine?

did you change your thermostat at one point??..there are 2 differnt kinds of thermostat that will fit in...but only one is the right one..its not the temp of it..its a matter of a long or short stem....pull yours and see if its the long stem...it has been known for the parts guy to give out the wrong one..

Until 1996, all 7.3L Powerstrokes that were manufactured used an International water pump and an International short stem 203o thermostat . In 1996, Ford changed to a lower degree 195o thermstostat. They changed water pump designs at this time as well. The new pumps required the new long stem 195o thermostat in place of the short stem to properly seat the bypass disk. All 1996-2003 Ford PSDs now come equipped with a long stem 195o thermostat. Recently the factory replacement thermostat available at the parts counter changed to 192o.

Although International still uses a 203o thermostat in some applications and that thermostat is available at most auto parts stores, it is the wrong part for the 1996 - 2003 Powerstroke. DO NOT USE THIS! It has a shorter shaft and will not shut off the internal pump bypass. This will cause inaccurate coolant flow direction through the engine.

Do you think the pistons seizing is from combustion heat, or cooling system failure?

I guess it would either be a cooling system failure, or an oil cooling failure to get pistons siezed without a chip or anything....

it very well could be..if he has the short stem..the short stem will not shut off the internal pump bypass. This will cause inaccurate coolant flow direction through the engine.the coolent just gets hotter and hotter..the moter will over heat with out showing on the temp gauge..like Joe said..mostly back of the block..the same will happen when running no thermostat...i would think if it was fueling or oil...he would have noticed a bad running truck with lots of smoke before it did any damage...

I didn't blow the engine myself. I bought this junk blown up . I put a junkyard engine in it and don't want the same thing to happen. I put a new water pump and stat. on it would autozone have it right with this "long stem" deal I bought it a month ago.

If Autozone supplied the thermostat, you likely have the wrong one.

Yeah, well, with a stock truck, you pretty much have 0 chance of burning the pistons unless the oil jets fail,

or , yes, the coolant wasnt flowing proper and simply overheated and seized.

How is the engine running now, anyways?

You can tell if you have the wrong one, if your engine melts down.Sorry, I couldn't resist. Just order the 203* stat from dieselsite, or the factory stat from Ford (not IH) and be done with it.
