My 1997 Ranger has gone through a overhaul, i have done a 302 swap from a 86 mustang, my question is does any one know how to wire the alternator to the voltage regulator from scratch, i have a factory ford alternator for a 87 mustang, and a wells vr, any help would be greatly appreciated
the alternater has 4 places for wires, large one i have connected to the batt. grounf i have conected to a ground, i have sto, and flo left on the alternator, and on the reg i have a (i s f a) posts, a basic wells regulateri dont know what to hook up tp the regulater from the alternater, and where, and i also dont know what to put on the terminals marked ( i s a f)??? please help
Wire the F (field) terminal on the regulator to the Field terminal on the alternator. The stator term on the alt is not used however it can be used for an electric choke.
The S term on the regulator needs to go to the ignition switch so it will have +12 when the engine is running. The purpose of this is to tell the regulator to start supplying voltage to the field terminal when the engine is running.
The Bat terminal goes to the Bat connection on the solinoid. Be sure the regulator case is grounded.

the s terminal goes to the sta. on the alt
the i port on the regulator goes to the ignition.
sta can ALSO have a wire to the choke.

You are describing the version that uses the idiot light in the dash. The way he was describing to hook it up uses the ammeter in the dash. Ford had two ways of wiring the older alternators.
