Alternator/ Voltage Regulator Wiring

How many wires come off the alternator & how many heavy-gauge? Describe the alt as best you can because there are several types that work differently.

Basically, the answer is: wire it the way it was on the original (donor) vehicle.

Wire the F (field) terminal on the regulator to the Field terminal on the alternator. The stator term on the alt is not used however it can be used for an electric choke.

The S term on the regulator needs to go to the ignition switch so it will have +12 when the engine is running. The purpose of this is to tell the regulator to start supplying voltage to the field terminal when the engine is running.

The Bat terminal goes to the Bat connection on the solinoid. Be sure the regulator case is grounded.

the s terminal goes to the sta. on the alt
the i port on the regulator goes to the ignition.
sta can ALSO have a wire to the choke.

You are describing the version that uses the idiot light in the dash. The way he was describing to hook it up uses the ammeter in the dash. Ford had two ways of wiring the older alternators.
