Fuse box puzzle??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 09:30 PM (EST)]The plastic case of the fuse box in my 1973 F-100 2wd (no air, nothing special) is so worn that I can't read what fuse is what! I'm trying to trace a no power to the turn signals problem. Does anybody have a diagram of this box showing what fuse is what? The box is clean and working, but the words naming the fuses are worn off. If no one has a diagram, can you tell me which fuse controls the turn signals? There are several older long glass tube types, and a pretty short one as well. I suspect it's the short one.

The problem as I see it: Power comes from a fuse, and then goes to the flasher unit, then on up to the turn signal switch. With the ignition on, I can't read any power from either side of the flasher! There is a blue wire that I think carries the power on up to the switch, and a red/wht (?? hard to see the colors) wire that brings power to the flasher...is that right? All fuses are good, so I need to trace the wire from the fuse to the flasher... but again, can't tell which fuse! Otherwise, the emergency flashers, brake lights, and running lights all work fine!

Sorry to be so wordy, just want to make sure I'm understood. Thanks, Polkat

Fuse box puzzle??

Thanks Dennis,

But I guess that's a later year box. The box on my '73 only uses half the fuses, and they are positioned differently. Looks like I should be looking for a 15 amp fuse, but there isn't one, so the wrong fuse (although they are all good) must have been used.

You don't have a drawing for an earlier box do you? It says Ford on it and is mounted in the right place and has the right age(!), so I must assume it is original. If you don't have one thanks anyway!!

Thanks Dennis, that's the one!! Unfortunately, it makes the problem get bigger. The complaint is that my turn signals simply quit working a few days ago. The brake lights, and emergency flasher work fine.

I read both side of the "real" turn signal fuse and there is power. However, there is no power to the Orange/Yellow wire at the flasher unit as there should be. So my guess is that the turn signal switch itself is good (and it's flasher also works in the emergency position). The backup lamps and wiper lamp which also use this fuse also don't work. So everything on this fuse is dead, though the fuse is good and has power.

As I understand it, power goes from the fuse through a blk/red wire to the backup lamp switch, then travels on through a wht/blk wire to the wiper switch (for it's lamp I guess), then on through a orn/yel wire to the flasher unit. Somewhere in this line there must be a break. So I guess the best process is to trace all these lines for power. Is that what you'd do?

Now the really weird thing. The fuse socket I said was totally dead (although the fuse is good) turns out to be the one for the instrument lamps (among other things) based on the diagram. Yet...they work!! However other stuff on that line doesn't work. You can usually tell if someone has been rewiring or tampering with things, but that just ain't the case here.

Any of this sound familar? Any further suggestions? They will be much appreciated. Thanks, Polkat.
