I know this may not be the best place for this but you guys know your crap so I figured I'd ask.
Got a leaky rear end on my 97 F350. So I got 2 questions for you guys:
1) They say I need to add friction modifier when changing the fluid, I have a bottle of limited slip axle concentrate layin around, is this the same stuff there talking about?
2) I just use RTV silicone to seal the cover back on correct? I have a boat load of the high temp red rtv silicone any reason I can't use this?
Most friction modifiers are the same, but for some reason, some are not compatible with certain fluids. You may be able to get away with the stuff you have, but for the cost of a small bottle, it may be best to just buy the fresh stuff from your dealer.
Would hate to hear that you tried some stuff that was laying around, and the clutches chattered, and you had to go buy the right stuff anyway.
Get the good stuff from the beginning, and eliminate some headaches.
As far as your rear gaskets question, you can use your RTV. I have not run a gasket on any differential cover for years. Wow, I am thinking back, and can't even remeber the last time I even used one. Yeah, you will be just fine using RTV on your cover, just let it dry before you tighten the bolts all the way down. You do not want to squeeze out all of the RTV and create a leak.
I doubt one bottle of friction modifier will be enough. So leave the level down a little when you fill it. Put one in and see how it acts, then keep adding till it doesn't chatter anymore.
