I recently transplanted a 73 F100 cab onto a 78 chassis equiped with a 302 engine fired by the Durapark system. I have this unit running but it is hard to start. As this truck sat a number of years I can't rule out carburetion problems at this point and in fact notice it takes a long time to come off high idle and run smoothly. That said I do have a couple of dura spark questions. First, I am only feeding the unit with the ignition on wire. I tried to hook up the starter feed to the starter post on the solenoid but after starting the starter stays engaged. I checked out with a test light and find that even with just the ignition feed to the duramax I get current feeding through the duraspark unit and out through the starter circuit feed now disconnected. Is this normal? Does this starter feed retard timing at start up? I also dont have water temp/oil pressure sensors etc hooked up on the out side of the duraspark unit are any of the other connections besides those to the distributor required to operate properly? Thanks for any input! Jim

Make sure that the duraspark unit has 2 power feeds one from the "I" terminal of the starter relay for startup and the other from a 12 volt source that is energized only when the key is set to "run". I beleive that the first circuit retards the timing slightly for easier starts.
Anyway that link will explain it.
