I have a 2001 Super Duty. I love the truck. I lost all my forward gears. Drives pretty fast in reverse Anyway should I consider just fixing the current transmission, get remanufactured 4r100 (jasper) or should I upgrade a little? I tow a camper 6-8 times a summer and from time to time tow cars and things. Not heavy use but used a little. Just looking for a little suggestion.
Odds are good that the fluid carried bits and pieces through all of the transmission. Just fixing the problem will most likely leave some trash behind.
For my money, I'd upgrade. There are aftermarket rebuilts available with modified valve bodies and higher stall torque converters. Factory tech and Brians comes to mind. There are also kits that you can supply to a rebuilder, but I don't think they come with new converters.
Jasper has a nice reputation because of their warranty, but they don't specialize in high performance. Their rebuilds are typically build up to snuff, but if you over worked the stock one, their rebuild may burn out just as quickly. It's not really an upgrade, but a get you back on the road part. Most people here have some kind of power adder and would like to get more than just a like stock rebuilt part.
On the other hand, if you don't mind just getting an average transmission it's a good choice.
