390 total timing with light mods

390 total timing with light mods

I think my 390 is all stock except for headers and a 600 edlb carb should the total timing still be at a stock setting. and how do I know what the stock setting is not knowing what the car came out of and year. Are all 390 set the same. Do all distributers have the same amount of vac & spin advance. if not how do tell the diferance.

Total timing on any FE regardless of mods should be a max of 38° mechanical advance only. For a street motor, 36° is a very livable and safe number. Set by total mechanical advance, then check the initial and use that number. A lot safer way to do timing than trusting an initial setting without pulling the base plate out of the dist. and seeing what the advance curve is.
