Problems going into reverse

Ok, I hope someone can help, so he I go. I have an '03 v10 auto trans, 4x4, with 120k. The problem is shifting into reverse from park, the trans doesn't go into reverse. I have to put it into drive then into reverse, to back up. Anyone else have this problem, or have any ideas what to look for? Thank you.

Do you have a lot of play on the linkage on the steering column ? Or will it not actually go in even when the shifter does find reverse ?

There is not a lot of play. It shift into reverse ok on the steering column, but the trans does not go into reverse.
