Replaced the wheel bearing / hub assembly and lower ball joint on my 96 Taurus wagon 2 days ago. Did not undo the upper end of the strut at that time. Drove for a day everything seemed good. Today the strut mount in the upper fender / tower, squeeks, squawks, and stutters as I turn the wheel. I have gotten as far as identifying this as the noisey area and spraying some aerosol lube at the outside of it where accesible, but hasn't seemed to help. Any tips, or ideas? Did I damage it by moving it out of position when remove and installing the ball joint? Can it be fixed? Sound like it needs to be replaced? Time for a strut compressor? Any way to do it in the vehicle? THANKS in advance. THIS PLACE HAS BEEN THE GREATEST!! Appreciate ALL the help I get here!!
Tried everything obvious this evening. A couple ratchet tie downs trying to compress the spring...no good. Broke one. Took the strut out of it's tower. Tried some more aerosol Mystery Oil spray in all the slots and holes in bottom of the bearing plates...Appreciate any advice, tips, or tricks. Just awful noisy when tuning the wheel. Same with car up on jack and no vehicle weight on it...Can see the top of the strut getting pushed around in its mount under hood when turning lock to lock. Looks like it's really working the power steering
I suppose no-one here is used to working with struts. I`ve done a few so I will give you my opinion. I would buy/hire a couple of the screw type spring compressors, pull the whole strut out, compress the spring and replace the mounting or at least examine it to see if there is a seized bearing. Good luck.
Much appreciate that. Wife p/u'd a compressor from AutoZone's "loan a tool" today. And a new bearing seat. I'll try to take a peek tonight. I just had no idea there was even a bearing in there previously. THANKS
