filter for 6spd.?

does anyone make a filter kit for the 6spd? if not i was thinking of modifying a remote engine oil filter set up.

is the pump strong enough to push the ATF through a filter?

How often do you change your fluid? Mine's always come out looking as clean as the day it went in. Since we don't have a torque converter driving the temps up, and we don't have to worry about the fluid pushing any parts around, it only acts as a lubricant.

I'm sure you could rig something up. I just don't know how much of a benefit you'll see.

Is there a fluid pump in a standard?

I don't think a filtering system would be necessary, but a cooler might help to keep the fluid from breaking down. http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=180

Never heard of anybody filtering gear oil. No pump, would have to 'rig' something.

The cooler Roland linked to might help a bit, but mostly by adding an additional quart to the mix. Manual trannys don't get any more hot under a load than with no load.

Save your time for fishin.....

Good question Rick. I've never looked into it, but since I ordered mine with a cooler I assume there's one in there.

Maybe time to do a little digging.

Chris, does your sticker actually list a cooler?

I don't know for sure, but I know I have one. It was a factory order and I took delivery of it from the dealer back in 02 with 19 miles on the odometer.

By the way, it uses ATF instead of gear oil like the old ones. That kind of scared me at first, but I haven't had any troubles out of the manual trannys running this.

For some strange reason I've never thought about a pump or how the fluid gets to the cooler until Rick asked. Surely Ford wouldn't put a pump in just some of the trannys so they could run a cooler, so maybe it actually pumps the fluid in there. Like I said, time to do some digging. The last tranny I had apart was a 68 3 speed synchromesh. Things might have changed a little since then.

I just never heard of a standard trans with a fluid pump, but I don't know anything about this trans. Without a pump, don't see how it would circulate in a cooler or filter. I can't imagine that trans having a filter.

No problem Joe. I may soon discover I paid extra for a cooler that doesn't actually circulate any fluid through it. Who's the bigger donkey now?

Chris, where is your cooler located on the truck?

It's up by the radiator. Don't remember if it's in front or behind it, but remember tracing the lines back to the tranny one time. I'll look into this more tonight when I get a chance.

No aux cooler on the man trans. It is built into the rad. There is a pump in the ZF-6 to circulate the ATF. ZF does not use gear oil.

Do an UOA on the ATF that is in your ZF-6 right now. If it comes back high with metal content, research/install a filter along with an ATF change. If it comes back with no unusual wear/ metal content, then do not waste the money on a filter and keep up with your normal maintanence. My .02

On edit, Miller, I did not realize it was you. Napa or a local auto parts store usually carries an inline universal trans ATF filter. You just cut your steel feed or return line and splice it in. A second way is to go to the dealer and ask for the inline ATF filter that they require that you install on all Ford rebuilt Auto transmissions that you buy from the dealer. It will work for you too. It is just an inline magnetic filter.

I highly recomend you pick up a bottle of the trans coller/line flush at Napa or something equivalent.(Green and white I think) I used the one Napa sold and it worked awesome. Just undo both steel lines at the trans. Attach the rubber hose and blow away. Use entire can and button back up. It pushed a ton of black crap out of the cooler that is built into the rad. Once again highly recomended especially for the high mile PSD's with the ZF-6.

For those of you subscribed to the thread that need info on the ZF-6. Here you go.
