Grain prices are dropping off right now already. In all honesty, it wont be much better than break even for us again! Like Morris said, crop inputs are taking all of our money.
I think my dad is gonna do ok this year so far. He said the cost wasnt too too bad this year, although he has told me what he spends and that is amazing!
Is it really that long? I thought my dad told me four years would clean the land right out. It doesnt matter, your right it wouldnt be easy to get started, but might, MIGHT be worth it in the end.
It might be only 4 years to get the land cleared up but years ago I heard that it takes 7 years in order to be certified. We`ve got some hay land that`s never seen any type of spraying for the last 30 +years, I wonder how that`s viewed for an organic certification........
Yeah my two quarters have been alfalfa for awhile too, too bad i didnt have about 10 more quarters like that, Id be tempted to give organics a shot then!
I think that organics are alot of extra work with less yield so it probably isn`t a cheap way to farm either.
One other thought is what do you do with a grasshopper, wheat midge or other insect problem............
Apparently you spray with vinegar, and stuff like that. The yields arent quite as good, but are supposed to be fairly decent, and the price for organic grain is alot higher then regular grain, I see goods and bads!
I always think about what my dad tells me he spends a year on fertilizer and chemical, its mind blowing.
and we wonder why cancer is raging... personally i'll pay more to eat something that i know hasn't been doused with poison... personally i think that the lack of input costs, chemicals & fertilizer, would well offset any lower yield resulting in less crop payout. that and the higher price for your crop. once you're set up for it, it's not more expensive than "regular" farming, just more labour intensive.
You are right about the chemicals. However, to bridge the gap where you lose production from no inputs and not sell any crop at an organic premium is impossible unless you are either rich or have no reliance on the income from your farm for living.
