Rear diff ID
Anyone know of a website to ID rear diffs? Or any tips on what to look for to ID it. We aren't sure what's in our 55 Merc and the guy we bought it off of didn't know either. The engine was swapped out for a 69-70 Mustang 302 and the 3 speed tranny (trying to ID it as well, but I found a link on this forum for that).

Well, your three speed will be the Ford "303" top-loaded, iron case, side shifted, all-synchro unit intro'd in '63.

Your axle could be the original, which is possibly a Dana 44:

.... Or it could be the 8 inch out of the Mustang. That would be marginal but it's lasted this long. Or a 9 inch. Pics of both the 8 and 9 are here, basically they are a drop-out carrier axle vs. the integral carrier of the Dana.
